Small Cruiser House



The cool Benson Ford Ship is found towering on a cliff on the South Bass Island in Lake Erie. Originally, Henry Ford had it built as his own cruise ship and named it after his grandson. But then Frank J. Sullivan bought the luxurious vessel from a salvage company, brought it to the island, and transformed it into a lakeshore residence for his family. It is now owned by Bryan Kasper. Car Ferry House


Mary Breuer and her husband live aboard the Maritol (a decommissioned Icelandic car ferry docked at Pier 54), which was built in 1975. They bought the car ferry alone for $260,000, and spent another $600,000 repainting the exterior, rebuilding the engine, converting the electrical system to United States standards and other alterations required to make the ship habitable. This cool hobbit house located in Switzerland is embedded in the side of a hill, and it is very hard to spot. One of the entrances from a nearby barn leads residents and guests through an underground pathway, providing an alternate entryway into the home; and the circular opening in the mountainside allows for lots of windows, through which natural light can enter the house, and you can have the most awesome mountain view ever! The underground home was a collaboration between the Netherlands architects at Search and Christian Muller Architects. Link

The plane itself cost $2000, but moving it cost $4000 and renovating it for habitation took another $24000.
