The Mysterious Giant Monuments of Yugoslavia

These monuments appear alien, odd and empty, stark reminders of a struggle long since forgotten by a nation that no longer exists.During the 60s’Yugoslavia goverment build these mysterious monuments to show the world the strength of the Socialist Republic.

Today these sculptures now in ruins are located in Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Bosnia.

Monument to the Revolution of the people of Moslavina.

There are hundreds of them scattered throughout villages and rural landscapes in the former Yugoslavia. Once the site of pilgrimages by schoolchildren, military veterans, patriots, and mourners who had lost family in WWII, these Spomeniks (monuments) are today rarely visited.

Photographer Jan Kempenaers has traveled throughout the Balkans to photograph these wild, strange structures that have lost much of their cultural relevance.
